World War Chewing Gum - World Wide Gum Co.
V-360

These rare cards were part of a series of 48 Cards Depicting Scenes from World War I issued by the World Wide Gum Company Limited of Montreal, Quebec, Canada (often referred to as the Canadian Goudey). At first glance these cards appear similar to the R-174 World War series issued by The Goudey Gum Company. The R-174 series was first issued in early 1933, and I assume these cards were issued about the same time. The series is listed in Burdick's American Card Catalogue as series V-360. In contrast to the R-174 series the images used on these cards were Canadian Official War Photographs (as stated in small print on the fronts of the cards), and feature images dealing with Canadian or British troops and battles from World War I. The back provides a description of the action shown of the front of the card written in both French and English. It also says Printed in Canada on the back. These cards measure 2 7/8 inches by 2 3/8 inches approximately. Due to the lower population in Canada than in the US, print runs in Canada were much smaller compared with American Cards. (Because of this the majority of all Canadian non sports cards are far scarcer than cards issued in the US.) Examples of these cards are shown below.
